Chapter Seven

Veronica watched the Cadillac fade into the distance with a heavy heart. She knew it was foolish, but she just couldn’t help feeling rather jealous of her sister, driving off, sitting in the front seat of the car, smiling sweetly at Phillip, and giving Veronica a rather smug look as they went. It was almost too much to bear, but that was life, she told herself sadly as the large vehicle disappeared from view.

Cindy and Greg were obviously quite nervous at the prospect of having to tell his parents of their marriage. Veronica felt for them, but they had to face up to their actions sooner or later. She felt that the hardest task was still ahead of them, informing Mr Crawford! Somehow, Veronica sensed that he would not be so easy to persuade as Greg’s parents. From what Phillip had told her of them, they seemed to be quite rationally minded people, who - once they came to terms with their son’s marriage - would soon accept the situation. Cindy would be bound to win them over, she thought. Who could resist that bubbling personality, after all?

A few customers came into the shop, and Veronica busied herself serving, and generally being as helpful as possible. A young couple, who had entered after the others, spent some time admiring the hand-carved pipes that a friend of Elizabeth’s carved specially for them, on an exclusive basis. Elizabeth had met him at art school, and he had become very successful since starting his business.

Whether one actually smoked or not did not seem to matter. Customers who had purchased the pipes did so mainly because they fell in love with his carving. They were really quite beautiful, and Elizabeth herself had purchased one as a gift for Frank, her mother’s new husband. He treasured it, her mum had told her in a rare letter (writing was never her mum’s strong point).

After a lot of discussion, the couple decided to buy no fewer than three pipes, one for their respective fathers, and one for themselves. It transpired that none of them actually smoked, but all of them were pipe collectors! This was a new breed of customer to Veronica - she never even knew that there were such people as pipe collectors. One to take note of, she thought.

The afternoon seemed to drag. The weather had improved slightly, but even the sight of the all-too-elusive sun did not cheer Veronica. Everything was so quiet with everyone gone. Elizabeth and Tim had not returned yet, and she was afraid that perhaps they were having a hard time with Mrs Leeson. She could be extremely awkward when she wanted to. Veronica hoped Elizabeth had not fallen out with her mother, a not infrequent happening. The door opened and two elderly ladies entered the shop, and Veronica had her attention taken for almost an hour, culminating in the purchase of a postcard. She smiled to herself as the ladies left the premises. Can’t win them all, she mused.
